KUALA LUMPUR: The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail today hits out at individuals who showed immaturity in their thinking despite the country's 62 years of independence.
He said it was clear that some members of the public were using technology to insult the royal institutions of the country.
"They do not consider the consequences of such action. Although arrests have been made, cases of contempt against the royal institution are still ongoing,” he said when officiating the Royal Institution Seminar (SIRaj-VI) at Tun Syed Nasir Cultural Hall, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Hall here today.
Also present were the Regent of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Jamalullail, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Sim Chee Keong; Mufti of Perlis, Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin; Chairman of the DBP Board of Directors, Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Hatta Shaharom; DBP director-general Datuk Abang Salehuddin Abang Shoekran and Universiti Malaysia Perlis Vice-Chancellor (UNIMAP), Prof IR TS Dr R Badlishah Ahmad.
The ruler stressed that such challenges sometimes undermined the role of the palace.
He said the Sultan’s role and power as the head of Islamic religion and Malay customs have never been denied even during the colonial era.
Apart from preserving the royal institution and the rights of the Malays, the Sultan is also responsible for maintaining and safeguarding the rights and interests of the other races.
“I urge all citizens to be aware of royal institutions and that the royal system is always relevant and a source of strength for the people regardless of race, age or educational background.
"In fact, it is a complement to the country's administrative system." he said.
