The Female Correctional Facility in Windhoek was among the key installations toured by the Regent of Perlis, Malaysia, Acting King Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, emphasising the importance of rehabilitation and international cooperation in corrections.

During his visit, the monarch engaged with the facility's administration and inmates, expressing a keen interest in the programmes designed to rehabilitate and reintegrate offenders into society.

The focus is on rehabilitation, and the provision of educational and vocational training to inmates is commendable, adding that it is crucial to support and share best practices in correctional management.

The Acting King discussed potential areas of collaboration between Malaysia and Namibia in the field of corrections and the implementation of innovative rehabilitation programmes.

He was particularly impressed by the diverse range of skills being taught, from tailoring and carpentry to computer literacy and entrepreneurship.

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail emphasised the importance of such programmes in reducing recidivism and fostering personal development.

The Acting King noted that while Malaysia still retains capital punishment, the decision to impose such sentences is determined solely by the judiciary.

He stressed that Malaysia is actively striving towards legislative reform, aiming to address and potentially amend the current practices to balance legal practices with evolving human rights considerations.

Commissioner General of the Namibian Correctional Service, Raphael Hamunyela, met with the visiting leader and discussed the current state of the correctional system and potential areas for future collaboration.
