KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - A team of cyclists in Perlis regularly tour the villages in the state and meet up with the locals with one of the cyclists being a prominent member of the state's royal family.

The Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail cycles with his team a distance between 10 and 25 kilometers depending on the location of the village he visits.

Along the way he looks for the poor and needy Muslims who can be assisted. While on cycling tours he sets aside the royal protocol and visits the homes of those identified as poor and in need of assistance. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin has been touring the state on his cycle over the last few years and believes this is the best way to get close to the people and learn of their woes.

And the Raja Muda is not alone when he goes about with his cycling routine. Being the President of the Perlis Islamic Religious Council (MAIPs), Tuanku Syed Faizuddin is accompanied by senior officials of MAIPs including its chief executive officer, Ustaz Malik Hussin, and the manager of Baitulmal Perlis, Ustaz Mohd Nazim Mohd Noor and state police chief Datuk Zull Aznam Haron.

PROUD TO RECEIVE THE VISIT OF A ROYALTY

And the Raja Muda who arrives on a bicycle is most welcomed by the villagers. His arrival brings a sense of hope for the poor and needy.

A former homeguard volunteer, Yup Yusuf, 75, felt elated when the Raja Muda dropped in at his meagre home in Paya Burma last April.

During the visit, his majesty presented the zakat (tithe) from MAIPs amounting to RM400.

Another local, Jamaliah Saad, 55, from Kampung Gial is happy for the fact she had received a new-three room home worth RM33,000, contributed by MAIPs in December 2013.

MAIPs paid for the new house after the Raja Muda during his cycling tours found her living in a dilapidated home.

And in April this year when a storm hit Perlis, 70 homes were damaged and the Raja Muda cycled to the affected area to provide a helping hand.

The Raja Muda's cycling tours usually start after the Asar prayers and ends after the Isyak prayers at a designated mosque.

Since early 2014, more that 40 cycling activities involving the Raja Muda have taken place with the homes of more than 100 poor and destitute visited.

Some were curious why the Raja Muda wants to trouble himself by cycling when he can travel comfortably to the locations in a vehicle.

A HEALTHY ACTIVITY

As for Tuanku Syed Faizuddin it is all about going to the ground and seeing for himself the people's welfare.

Apart from that, as cycling is a healthy activity he wants the sport to be promoted to the society. An this can be seen from his words when launching the extreme cycling track at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Perlis in Arau recently.

"Cycling serves as a good cardiovascular exercise, strengthening the body and mind, helping one to lead an active and healthy life. A healthy lifestyle helps to prevent diabetes, obesity, arthritis and depression", said Tuanku Syed Faizuddin at the launch.

Cycling can also be made a family activity and promoted to the younger generation and cycling is easy in Perlis as much of the state's landscape is flat.

Apart from leading MAIPs' cycling teams, the Raja Muda also participates in cycling events conducted by other parties including the Regiment 504 of the Territorial Army. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin is the commander of the regiment.

And the Raja Muda cycles beyond Perlis, with his latest cycling expedition 'Royal Pearl Balik Pulau Ride' headed to Penang on June 8.

PERLIS VETERANS TOO LIKE TO CYCLE

The old timers too take cycling seriously in Perlis. A retired teacher, Azizan Ali, 65 can vouch for this as he himself had cycled across the Peninsula two years ago. The former headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kubang Gajah, Perlis has plans to cycle 57 kilometers in conjunction with the 57th Merdeka Anniversary this August.

Apart from cycling, he will swim 57 kilometers and run for the same distance in a show of patriotism. Rohani Rahmani, 59, who had cycled to Thailand on several occasions is now planning for another cycling tour.

DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES IN PERLIS ARE PROMOTING CYCLING

The cycling activities are now being taken seriously in various government departments and agencies through activities to enhance physical fitness.

As for example the state police contingent organised the 'PDRM International Border Ride 2014' in April in conjunction with the 207th Police Day.

The programme was well received when about 800 participants, including Perlis Police Chief Datuk Zull Aznam Haron and the police counterparts from Thailand took part in the 20km cycling around the Padang Besar town.

Apart from that, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) also promotes cycling and the institution organises "Jom Berbasikal Jelajah Perlis" cycling event from time to time.

The Perlis Forestry Department provides a cycling circuit for endurance cycling activities that cuts across traditional orchards in Sungai Batu Pahat.

There is also an endurance cycling track worth RM1.1 million in Sungai Batu Pahat built by the Tourism Ministry to promote cycling activities.

As for a cycling enthusiast, Rohizam Ahmad, 31, the public should make use of the cycling facilities for the sake of their health.

All that they need to do is buy a bicycle and start cycling and enjoy the fresh air.

And what more when even the Raja Muda of Perlis has embarked on cycling, start cycling?
